Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It remains a standalone product focused on research and learning, while also becoming more integrated with Google's Gemini ecosystem.
We keep “NotebookLM” in this page title and URL because many users still know the product by its previous name.
Gemini Notebook and ChatGPT now overlap more than they used to
The older version of this article said NotebookLM worked only with uploaded documents and did not fetch information from the web. That is no longer accurate. Gemini Notebook now includes stronger source-discovery and research capabilities, while ChatGPT can also work extensively with uploaded files and project context.

- Running deeper multi-source research with citations.

Suppose you are reviewing 20 reports about one topic
Gemini Notebook workflow:
- Add or discover the relevant sources.
- Ask questions across the notebook.
- Create a report, mind map or study output.
- Return to the same notebook as the research collection grows.
ChatGPT workflow:
- Create a Project or upload the relevant documents.
- Ask for extraction, comparison or analysis.
- Use web search or Deep Research when current outside sources are required.
- Turn the findings into a draft, table, code-backed analysis or other deliverable.
Neither workflow removes the need to check critical facts, source quality and whether the generated interpretation matches the evidence.
Gemini Notebook retains a strong advantage for built-in study outputs
The old article highlighted listening to research while traveling. That remains a useful distinction, but the product has moved beyond simple text summaries. Gemini Notebook now supports Audio Overviews and other study-oriented outputs directly from notebook material.

The decision should follow the task, not brand loyalty. Recheck the products periodically because both are adding features quickly.
Notebook-centered research vs broader AI workspace
Gemini Notebook remains strongest when a curated body of sources is the center of the workflow. ChatGPT is broader when the work combines research with writing, coding, data analysis, web search and continuing project context. The overlap is growing, so choose by workflow rather than by an old feature checklist.
