Homesite
As for free editor I use DevPHP. I'm a part-time PHP instructor at Sierra College so I always encourage all my student to use a free open source editor. I always recommend DevPHP but also send then to www.phpeditors.com for then to research an maybe select any other editor of their choice.
Thanks
Rafael

I use this software under Windows since it's free and all in one (both CSS, HTML, PHP, ...) is available there.
And since he don't auto-complete you have to really learn PHP ;)

| I'm using Crimson Editor 3.70 Release (Freeware) - it's basically note pad plus a LOT of syntax highlighting. It's project managment tools leave something to be desired but it can highlight alsorts of code including PHP (of course ;-) ), JSP, ASP, Basic, Java, Perl and Python (and more!).

| HTML-Kit by Chami. Lots of awesome plugins, versatile, and very helpful. Free, too, for students.

PSPad, it's better than PHP Designer 2005!!
http://www.pspad.com/en/
It's Windows only.
It knows about FTP (like HTML-kit), but it also knows about highlight matching parantheses and some intellisense.
